Overnight Success: A Simple and Straightforward Path to Success

If you’re reading this post, I’m sure you want to know the straightforward pathway to success and understand how to achieve overnight success. Ok, here we go!

Smart Donald Trump

I was almost getting tired of not hitting my target and achieving that millionaire dream when I stumbled upon this enlightening quote from Donald Trump. Even amidst the scandals and infamy, I still respect the old man a lot, he is actually full of wisdom. The quote goes thus: “People who think achieving success is a linear A-to-Z process, a straight shot to the top, simply aren’t in touch with reality”.

The Fantasy

I was inside a Uber cab heading home from lunch at a cafeteria some days ago, my mind was drifting around the world and also thinking about the great idea conceived by Travis Kalanick and Gareth Camp in 2009 which birthed Uber, the driver started playing a rap song. The lyrics I could fathom goes thus: “I woke up in a new Bugatti”. Then the thought of me falling asleep right now in this old Honda and waking up in a new Bugatti the next morning took over my fantasies. It would really be great I thought, acquiring a new Bugatti overnight without any stress or effort.

I was brought back to my senses by a tap from the Uber driver that I had to alight.

The Reality

The harsh truth is that ‘waking up in a new Bugatti is a flimsy facade that has no atom of reality in it. The rapper was just having fun and saying those nice things to sell his record.

Now, what I mean is that there is nothing like an overnight success. Success is a result of constant and consistent series of moves and actions backed up with strategic plans and structure. You cannot sleep in an old Honda at night and wake up in a new Bugatti the next morning. It’s simply an outrageous expectation.

This is how some websites and ‘smart’ entrepreneurs bait you to sell you ridiculous ideas. They tell you that you can make $100 million in a year by just sitting in your room and referring people to a website. Another one I heard is, “Come and learn how to invest your money and make at least $150,000 within a month”. What? That’s incredible!

Late American statesman and politician, Robert Foster Bennet said, “Anyone who wants to sell you overnight success or wealth is not interested in your success; they are interested in your money”. My reasoning, logic, and experience agree with him.

Models From the Valley

Uber now has a revenue of $US1.5 billion (2015) and about 6700 employees, it took them 7 solid years to achieve this, since 2009. Facebook presently has a revenue of $US17.928 billion (2006) and about 13,598 employees, it took them 12 years to achieve this, since 2004. Apple now has a revenue $US 233.715 and about 115, 000 employees (2015).

During all these years of cumulative successes at Silicon Valley, it was never all rosy, there were various impediments encountered by these ‘once upon a time’ start-ups. They succeeded through consistent hard work and forbearance.

Many more examples abound around in the business world. No greatness was ever achieved overnight (overnight success), every good thing takes time.

Bottom Line

Anytime I want to start fantasizing again and fall into that flimsy “I woke up in a new Bugatti” reverie, I quickly wake myself up to the reality of time with the words of great Donald Trump. Never go after incredible business or investment offers. Anyone promising you overnight success is an enemy in disguise, who unfortunately may not even know he is an enemy.

Take your time, forbear and keep at it so you will hit your dream someday soon.
